MATTA Welcomes Appointment of Anthony Loke As Minister of Transport

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 May 2018: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) welcomes our new Minister of Transport Anthony Loke, who has expressed the need to improve road safety, bring the MH370 episode to a closure and place the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) under his ministry.

MATTA President Datuk Tan Kok Liang said “All three issues are closely related to tourism, as safety and security of tourists are paramount in any destination, and equally important to local residents. Making our roads safer would save many lives and untold sufferings to injured victims and their loved ones.”

“We hope the Minister would look into specific areas that could spur the growth or transformation of the air, marine, rail and road transportation sectors, such as fixing of same Passenger Service Charge (PSC) regardless of service quality offered at various airports; capping of domestic fares during peak seasons to lessen volatility; high-tech screening of passengers instead of frisking; safety of ferry services; upgrading of tourism vehicles to meet tourists’ expectations; and full implementation and enforcement on e-hailing service to level the playing field for private and licensed vehicles”.

“There are many other areas which the Ministry of Transport, now in charge of granting commercial vehicles permits in Peninsular Malaysia, could be fine-tuned to meet the challenges and changes of the road transport sector by engaging with industry players and associations.”

“As there are many issues for the Ministry of Transport to revisit and review, MATTA would be happy to offer our proposals and look forward to such meetings, as antiquated laws need to be modernised and current regulations implemented more effectively. With equitable policies in place, they will facilitate the growth of the air, marine, rail and road transportation sectors”, concluded Tan.
